Wine in Sardinia has existed for more than 5,000 years ago.

The Nuragic and Phoenician Civilizations once ruled the island. is particularly delighted to recommend Torbato and Cannonau di Sardegna.

Torbato is an ancient variety believed to have originated from the Phoenicians who first brought the grape to the Iberian Peninsula. Later, the Catalans took it to Sardinia when they were governing the island.

Hardly grown anywhere else on our planet – never mind Italy – Sardinia is the beating heart of Torbato and Sella & Mosca is the world’s foremost producer of this unique variety.

Sella & Mosca grows its Torbao around Alghero in Sassari, a province in the north of Sardinia.

Apart from Torbato, we are also delighted to recommend another white, namely their Vermentino, and, of course, the red Cannonau aka Grenache.

Both Torbato and Vermentino are pure and pristine. Zero oak.

Sella & Mosca Terre Bianche Alghero Torbato DOC 2018

Founded in 1899 by an engineer and a lawyer from Piedmont, Sella & Mosca is Sardinia’s Number One producer. The winery sets the benchmark for Torbato as they are the first to produce the variety 100% on its own. Unblended. Pure and total. Terre Bianche refers to the calcareous soil of the vineyard.  Bright light gold. Scented. Yellow flowers, quince, young peach and a hint of pineapples. Ripe, round and creamy/glycerol in texture. Full-bodied. A food wine rather than an aperitif. Outstanding with fish, seafood, clams and other shellfish whether raw, steam, blanched or stir-fried. Heavenly with Tuna Toro. What a label.

Sella & Mosca La Cala Vermentino di Sardegna DOC 2018

Bright, light, shining gold. White flowers, white peach, citrus and nutmegs. Creamy texture and freshness. Vermentino is also grown in the south of France where it is known as Rolle. Enjoyable as an aperitif and to pair with deep-fried and finger foods, noodles and pasta, seafood, ham, pork and chicken.

Sella & Mosca Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2018

Ruby with a light tawny tinge on the rim. A whiff of dried roses followed by cherry fruit. A hint of autumn leaves and leather. Reminds a bit of Burgundy. Fresh and with a little grip of skin/pip tannins on the finish. Balanced. Medium-bodied. Decant 30 to 45 minutes. Enjoyable on its own and with roast chicken, duck, lamb and tandooris. In French, Cannonau is Grenache and Granacha in Spanish. Sella & Mosca’s flagship Cannonau di Sardegna  is aged in old wooden vats made of Slovenian oak – the largest is a whopping 19,000 litres – and also in stainless steel tanks and concrete vats.  You will be tasting fruit, not “furniture”. The Art Deco label features the logo of Sella & Mosca, a depiction of how the early Phoenicians pressed the grapes in winemaking.
