Tenuta di Arceno Chianti Classico 2018
Rated a very good to great vintage, there is excellent fruit, tannins, and freshness in this 2018 Chianti Classico. Red ruby in complexion, the intense medium-plus bodied fruit includes red cherries and plums. Elegant silky tannins. Fruit to tannins to freshness is a seamless, harmonious package. The wine was aged 10 months in French oak and is made up of 85% Sangiovese and 15% Merlot. Winemaker Lawrence Cronin rates this alongside the great 2015 vintage. Decant 30 to 45 minutes.
Tenuta di Arceno Chianti Classico Riserva 2017
This Riserva recently received Tre Bicchieri or “3 Glasses”, the top award in Vini d’Italia Guide 2021. Organiser Gambero Rosso brought together 60 wine experts to taste some 22,000 wines from 2,500 producers drawn from all over Italy. Each wine is tasted blind. Just 2% of the wines entered were awarded the Tre Bichhieri rating. Uneven weather, including frost, resulted in a very low yield in 2017. What survived, many wines have concentration and vibrant acidity such as this Riserva. Red cherry/raspberry fruit, and tobacco, liquorice, and vanilla notes. The tannins are very fine. Persistent fruit with long freshness. Comprises 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged 10 months in French oak. Needs decanting 60 to 90 minutes for the wine to open up.
